Professor Fred Bergeson’s Commentary on Collection of President Nixon Interview Footage

Professor of Political Science Fred Bergerson

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s ’34 resignation from office, portions of a rarely-heard interview with former aide Frank Gannon have been published by the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Richard Nixon Foundation.

The segments were culled from more than 30 hours of interviews that Nixon did with Gannon in 1983. The videos were posted over a five-day period, beginning with Nixon recalling the day he decided to resign and ended with the 37th president discussing his final day at the White House.

“We can keep our perspective enough to learn what these tapes reveal,” said Professor of Political Science Bergerson in an interview with the Whittier Daily News. “It’s likely we’ll learn a more nuanced and sophisticated understanding of Nixon from Gannon’s material.”

Bergerson is a specialist in public policy and administration, the presidency and Congress, and civil-military relations.
