Whittier Students Publish Environmental Reporting in Red Canary Magazine

July 15, 2026

Bravo Salto and Isabella Cabral Two Whittier College students have published original environmental reporting in Red Canary Magazine, an independent publication dedicated to in-depth journalism on environmental and social justice issues.

The stories by Isabella Cabral ’27 and Kevin Bravo Salto ’27 grew out of work that began in the classroom before being further developed professionally, showcasing the real-world impact of their undergraduate studies.

Cabral, a rising senior majoring in psychology with a minor in social work, wrote “What the River Carries,” an in-depth look at PFAS, or "forever chemicals," in New Mexico's Rio Grande and their impact on communities and ecosystems.

Bravo Salto, a business administration major with a concentration in accounting, co-authored “Living on the Edge" with Tanner Sherlock. The feature explores how climate change is affecting the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and ongoing efforts to protect one of California's remaining coastal wetlands.

The articles exemplify Whittier's emphasis on connecting academic study with experiential learning, giving students opportunities to create meaningful work that contributes to public conversations on important issues.
