A total of 502 Whittier College students completed more than 23,000 hours of community service during the 2018-2019 academic year.
Political Science major Harrison Fuller ’21 is one of these students. His service-learning project involved helping prepare immigrants at Whittier Adult School to take the United States Citizenship Exam.
Fuller spoke about his project and the impact it had on his life during the 2019 College and Community Expo that was held recently on campus.
“I’ve been privileged in life as a middle class American citizen, with a good education. I’ve had both political and financial freedom and I wanted to use my privilege to help others. I also wanted to help because I have witnessed my undocumented neighbors living in the fear that they could get incarcerated at any time,” said Fuller who was on a panel with fellow students Manuel Chavez ’19, Kaitlin Fundell ’19, Astra Yatroussis ’19, and Professor Joyce P. Kaufman, director of the Center for Engagement with Communities (CEC).
The Expo, which also featured a poster presentation session, was organized by the CEC and funded by the BCM foundation. The CEC is designed to facilitate interactions between Whittier College and the Whittier community
During brunch, Kaufman was presented with a special proclamation by Whittier Mayor Joe Vinatieri, Whittier Council Member Fernando Dutra, and Whittier Council Member Cathy Warner. They recognized Kaufman for her years of service to the community through the CEC and congratulated her on her upcoming retirement.
