“Whittier College is a small, inclusive private college that offers a wonderful learning environment which is built for student academic success. The professors are all amazing and are always willing to offer any assistance that is needed to help students.”

What were some of the experiences that helped you have a successful first year at Whittier?

I took INTD 100, Your Whittier College Experience. This seminar course was only for first-year students and encouraged us to participate in various workshops and activities that provided resources and services available at Whittier College. I personally found this course to be so helpful in my transition from high school to college as it provided me with the resources to have a successful start to my college years.

My first-year advisor, Dr. Link, was especially helpful in advising me on what classes I would have to take to fulfill my graduation and degree requirements. She is a Biology professor and was always available to talk about concerns I had. Without her help, I would be lost and indecisive about the major I am pursuing and the classes I need to take to graduate.

Tell us about the Center for Advising and Academic Success (CAAS) and what you do there.

I’m a Biology tutor and help students taking Biology 151 and 152, which are core classes for those pursuing a Biology degree. Students present me with questions about challenging concepts and I do my best to simplify these concepts to make it easier to understand for studying purposes. I uphold a responsibility to be more than just a tutor. I’m also a friend—someone who is always available to listen and assist you in any of your concerns.

At CAAS, there are tutors for various subjects, peer mentors for student athletes, and academic advising. It’s also an open space for students to come in and study. There’s always someone available at CAAS to assist students. Whether you need help understanding a challenging concept in your class or want to find better studying methods, CAAS services can provide you with the help you need.

In addition to the support, what else do you love about Whittier College?

The campus is beautiful with rolling, scenic hills and Uptown Whittier is very lively and a fun off-campus area to enjoy. There are also extracurricular programs that students can join to make the most of their college experience including athletics and academic clubs. I have been very happy with my decision to join Whittier College and can’t wait for the years to come!
