Science & Learning Center

Whittier College has a stunning campus composed of green grass, brick walkways, and many palm trees.

The beauty of the campus was definitely a part of why I chose to attend. There are so many places to hangout with friends, study, or even take a nap. Here are my top favorite spots on campus to do those activities.

The Science and Learning Center

The rooftop of this building is incredibly zen and aesthetically pleasing. There are plants near the edge close to the railing, with tables and benches scattered around its wooden flooring. This aside, the main point of going to the roof is to see the incredible view. From up there, you can see the town of Whittier, its rolling green hills, and on a clear day an incredible view of Downtown Los Angeles.

While the ground level of Whittier College has a small town feel, once you go up to the Science & Learning Center (SLC) rooftop you truly realize your proximity to L.A. It's a great place to sit and read or listen to music. The SLC is open 24/7 so you can also get a great view of Los Angeles during the night when it's dark, getting a classic nighttime cityscape.

Founders Hill

Above the Campus Center and in front of Diehl Hall lies a beautiful hill perfect for sitting down and chatting with friends. It has a great view of lower campus and is perfect for people watching, if you’re into that. If you sit down for longer than ten minutes, you are guaranteed to see someone you know walking to or from class.

Be warned: if you’ve come to relax on a Tuesday around noon this is not the place for you. That’s when the Franklin Society conglomerates, transforming the hill from a peaceful sitting spot to an afternoon party. (Societies are like Whittier’s version of Greek life.) They’re really friendly though, so if you’re interested in rushing a boy’s society, definitely talk to them!

Top Floor, Wardman Library

At the top of the Bonnie Bell Wardman Library sits the silent floor. As someone who gets distracted easily, this is my favorite spot to study and get things done. This is not an area for group projects or studying with friends — on this floor, there’s absolutely no talking. This is where you get down to business on an essay that's due in two days. There are also a few couches and lounge chairs scattered throughout, making it the perfect place to take a nap between classes!

There are so many other great places on campus to explore as well. That’s one of the most fun things I did as a first year; just adventure around with a group of friends and hangout in random places. You’ll find a spot you love and will end up hanging out there before, after, or between classes.
