The Whittier College community is invited to participate in the Cultural Center's Safe Zone Program to become a visible ally and resource for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students, faculty and staff.

Purpose

As a Safe Zone Ally, you actively contribute to the entire campus community by demonstrating your public support of the LGBTQ community at Whittier . The Safe Zone program provides a visible network of allies who embrace and honor the rich diversity of our campus community. We train individuals to serve as allies who are informed, supportive, and affirming of the LGBTQ community at Whittier College, while constantly committed to self-work and education.

The Safe Zone Program provides two types of training, both described below.

Training Descriptions

LGBTQ 101. Learn key concepts related to LGBTQ identities and terminology, symbols and facets of LGBTQ culture, and information regarding many intersections that LGBTQ people may occupy as individuals with multiple identities. Upon completion of this training, you would be considered “LGBTQ Familiar” with the option of being equipped as an ally through Safe Zone Training.

Safe Zone Training. Focuses on responsibilities of an ally, practical strategies to aid in your role as a trained advocate, and creating Safe Zones on campus. NOTE: Little time is spent on LGBTQ 101 content review. Using case studies, scenarios, and group processing you will apply content from LGBTQ 101 to your role as an ally. Our sincere hope is that you will actively serve as a resource to LGBTQ students or any individual on campus who identifies as LGBTQ. Upon completion of this training, you will be offered the opportunity to identify your workspace as a Safe Zone and sign the Ally Pledge.
