At Whittier College, we understand that transferring to a new school can bring its own challenges, and sometimes that includes worrying about having enough to eat. That’s why we’re proud to offer the Poet Pantry, a welcoming, supportive space designed to help students facing food insecurity. Whether you’re juggling classes, work, or family responsibilities, the pantry is here to make sure you never have to worry about where your next meal is coming from.

The Poet Pantry isn’t just about food; it’s about people helping people. Around 20% of our students use the pantry, making over 1,000 visits each year. But what really makes it special is how it fosters a sense of community where students can connect, support one another, and truly feel cared for.

Thanks to a generous grant from PIH Health Whittier Hospital, a long-time partner of the College, the pantry recently underwent upgrades, including refrigeration to offer fresh, perishable foods. Our local Whittier Area Community Church also donates regularly, ensuring the pantry is stocked with a variety of nourishing options.

“We are proud to say that we’ve successfully removed the stigma that was once associated with using a food pantry,” Romo said. “This is a significant win for us. It is more than just about providing food, it’s about fostering a sense of community." The Poet Pantry has become an additional space where students can come together, share, and support one another.”

What’s truly unique about Whittier’s approach is how we involve students in every part of campus life, including helping to secure the funding that keeps the pantry running. Students in our Professional Writing classes get hands-on experience writing real grant proposals, learning valuable skills while making a difference right here on campus.

The Poet Pantry is just one example of the support waiting for you here, because your success is our priority, and no one should have to face challenges alone. Come join us, find your place, and know you’re always supported.
