Lydia Jackson ElementaryFor more than 12 years, Whittier College students have had the opportunity to learn about children's literature and their welfare through the pair course taught by Associate Professor of Education and Child Development Kathleen Ralph and Associate Professor of Social Work Paula Sheridan.

As part of this course, students tutor second graders at Lydia Jackson Elementary School (LJES) by reading with them and working on a project where the second graders create their book including the story and illustrations. To support this effort as well as others, the College has additional literacy partnerships with other social work classes, parents of LJES children, the Boys and Girls Club, SPIRITT Family Services, Whittier College's Instructional Media Designer Sonia Chaidez, and Stephanie Carmona in the education department.

"They are doing marvelous family literacy work with both technology (electronic books) and bi-lingual paperback books." said Sheridan.
