In an ever-changing global landscape, it is the goal of the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures to ensure that our students have the needed skills to communicate with the world.
We are proud to offer majors in Chinese, French, and Spanish, beginning courses in Japanese, and a Global Languages minor.
Faculty members in the department are diverse in background, travels, interests, and experiences. We are committed to research, teaching, and service, and count significant publications and teaching awards among us.
We encourage our students to travel the world to perfect their language skills. This becomes the foundation students use to explore the world and develop a sense of cultural awareness and global citizenship—skills our students will carry with them the rest of their lives.
Our majors graduate with a wide variety of opportunities before them. Alumni have gone on to teach at all levels of academia and enjoy careers in leading corporations, non-profits, in the law and medical fields, the government, military, and in a multitude of other arenas.
Indeed, what denotes our success is the community of current and former students who have flourished using skills we helped them develop during their studies at Whittier College.
