Data science combines mathematics, computer science, and statistics, and can be applied across the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, data science is one of the fastest-growing fields, with data-related jobs projected to grow 36 percent between 2023 and 2033, much faster than the average for all occupations. At Whittier, students gain more than just technical expertise. Anchored in the College’s liberal arts foundation, the major pairs technical training with critical thinking, creativity, and communication. Students also learn directly from faculty with advanced training and real-world experience in data science, ensuring both depth and relevance. By graduation, students are well prepared for a wide range of careers or advanced study. Course highlights include Introduction to data science with Python, where students work hands-on with real data, and machine learning, which explores how computers can identify patterns and make predictions. Students can also dive into specialized electives such as database design and implementation, all leading toward a senior capstone project.
The major includes 14 courses + a senior capstone (46–7 credits). Students gain a strong foundation in programming, statistics, machine learning, and ethical reasoning, plus the freedom to explore electives tailored to their interests.
