If your parent has been denied for the Federal Direct Plus Loan, you are eligible to receive an additional Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan to help pay for school expenses. If you are interested in the additional Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, you must visit the Office of Financial Aid. The amount which you are eligible to receive is based on your grade level.
REMEMBER: The additional funds are awarded to you due to a Federal Direct Plus Loan denial. Should your parents be eligible for the Federal Direct Plus Loan after you have been awarded the additional Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, the funds for the Federal Direct Unsubsidized will be cancelled and sent back to the U.S. Department of Education.
In addition, you are responsible for paying the interest on the additional Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan while you are in school. You may elect to defer the interest payments; however, Whittier College encourages students to make monthly payments to avoid capitalization. Capitalization is the adding of accrued interest to the principal balance at repayment.
